Why is vitamin B12 important?

The name of vitamin B12, cobalamin, comes from its cobalt content. Vitamin B12 is the only water-soluble vitamin that is stored in our bodies and which has a long half life – around one year in the liver. In case of insufficient vitamin B12 intake, it takes usually years before vitamin B12 deficiency develops.

We need vitamin B12 for normal amino acid metabolism, formation of red blood cells and normal development of nervous system. We get vitamin B12 active forms only from animal-based and vitamin B12 enriched plant-based foods.

2 different strengths

Vitamin B12-drops for infants consists of 100 μg of vitamin B12 for one drop. It is easier for medical staff to make dose guidelines and also dosing mistakes (under- and overdosing) are smaller. Vitamin B12-drops family version consists of 500 μg of vitamin B12. The usual dosage for increasing vitamin B12 stores is 500 μg daily for 1 month.

Absorption of B12

Vitamin B12 is absorbed around 2 μg by active mechanism and in addition, 1% by passive mechanism through the whole small intestine area. In case of supplements, it is the passive mechanism that plays the key role. The active absorption of vitamin B12 differs greatly from other water-soluble vitamins: first B12 binds with intrinsic factor, IF, glycoprotein in the stomach and then gets absorbed in the final part of the small intestine, ileum.

Vitamin B12 (methylcobalamin) may react with certain drugs, thus, drugs and B12 should be taken separately at least with an hour interval. The daily dosing and length of treatment is often different for children with different age and adults. Consult with your doctor for exact dosing guidelines according to your or your child´s vitamin B12 level.
